About the "Bohlen"

There is no place in Central-Europe where you can read the geology as easy as here, at the Bohlen.
The river Saale uncovered the single layers, so that the range of fold mountains, overlying rock and stream erosion are perfectly visible.The stone layers of the upper Devonian and the older Carboniferous contain lots of fossils, so it's possible to classify them very accuratly in the timescale.
There never where doubts about the age of the Zechstein, but it was more cumersome to  get the awarness about the Slate Mountain Range. Today you can define the stratigraphy unsing leading fossils. At this the Ammonites with the groups of Goniatites, Clymenines just as the Trilobites are schowing the time very exact. At the same time theese show the depht of the ocean that must have been here at their time of living.
There also is no better dissocation where the border between the Devonian and Carboniferous is running.


The rocks of the Devonian are practical for their time. Theese limes are technic very precious because they are weather resistent and good workable.
They where dismantled for a long time in the quarry and the "Mühltal" in Obernitz and used as paving slabs or as comodity in a marmor-factory.
In the quarry at the Bohlen untill 1938 every year about 11000 m³ of stones where taken. It got clossed in the beginning of WW2.
